Private Adoption...
In many instances an individual or couple deal directly with a biological mother and father in what is known as a private or "independent" adoption. Private adoptions, with consent given by the biological parents, is a very simple procedure. There is very little administrative red tape as one might encounter with an agency adoption. You will still need a home study, and either consent of the parents or termination of parental rights, but generally these adoptions move rather quickly.
Private adoptions can be by either a couple or a single parent. If your child is over 12 years old, they need to "consent" to their own adoption. We have worked with couples seeking to adopt a new born, as well as those adopting teenagers. As a side note, adoptive parents often ask if they can assist a biological mother's medical expenses related to the pregnancy and birth. The answer is generally yes (for birth and certain other related living costs) but they cannot pay for a mother to relinquish a child to them – as this is a crime.
